SHAKESPEARE RANCH
Never before has such a grand combination of iconic ranch, lakefront and forestland been offered for sale at once in Lake Tahoe’s rich history. This Landmark Tahoe lakefront Ranch has traded hands only twice since 1861. No other land holding on the shores of Lake Tahoe can imitate the image of the historic Shakespeare Ranch. The property encompasses fields and streams, forest and mountains, sandy beaches and crystal waters. Shakespeare boasts some of Lake Tahoe’s most accessible, yet unspoiled shoreline with hidden coves and boulder bays alongside well-provisioned harbors, all waiting to be explored. Mark Twain best describes the four season splendor found here as, "The fairest picture the whole earth affords."
Named for the protected meadow (glen) and year-round stream that flows through it (brook), the original settlement was founded in 1860. During the late 1800’s Glenbrook was home to the largest and most productive lumber operation in the Tahoe Basin. When the mining rush in the Comstock ended around the turn of the century, the lumber and mill town gradually transitioned into a summer resort community. With just a few small inns in the meadow and at the shore of Glenbrook Bay, the first visitors to the area arrived by stagecoach and by steamer from the West Shore. In 1906, the Bliss family assembled the Glenbrook Inn which included buildings from the original Jellerson Hotel and Lakeshore House. By the early 1900’s the once busy lumber operations had all but disappeared and Glenbrook had become the bucolic site of the Glenbrook Inn and Ranch. With railroad service from Truckee to Tahoe City and steamer service across the lake to Glenbrook, the Inn became the fashionable summer resort of affluent vacationers from around the country. The tradition continues today as generations gather by the beach with pier and cabanas, riding to the clubhouse by golf cart for lunch, tennis, or a round of golf. Just minutes from California by boat, harboring Nevada tax benefits.
The current owner of the Ranch began his love affair with Tahoe as a youngster during family summer vacations at the lake. Buying their first property in Glenbrook over 30 years ago, the family gradually acquired parcels around the original Glenbrook Inn and Ranch that compromise this idyllic compound. The name is derived from the towering rocky outcrop, Shakespeare Rock, where early settlers claimed they could see the cameo profile of the “Old Bard”. Over the past 25 years, they have relocated and restored many of the historic structures and buildings and have worked with architect Marc Appleton in designing and new construction, taking great care to maintain the historic integrity of the original Ranch.
“It’s just a great little town,” Appleton describes the community of Glenbrook. “It’s all white clapboard houses with picket fences. Glenbrook has East Coast roots, and the buildings were all somewhat inspired by New England.”
Property highlights of this 133-acre assemblage include over 400 feet of Lake Tahoe’s most desirable shoreline, a 397-foot shared pier with boatlift, five boat buoys, and nearly 40,000 square feet of improvements. There are 17 guest homes and cabins featuring 25 bedrooms centered around a courtyard with gazebo, and plans for a new approximately 9,500-square-foot home. There is a grand indoor pool with fireside dining and outdoor spa, a daylight wine tasting cellar, an office suite and gym, an art room, a catering area, and event bathrooms. The ranch would not be complete without its horse stables with paddocks, a green house, vegetable gardens, animal enclosures, and rodeo grounds with pens and bleachers, all flanked by the iconic Shakespeare Rock included in the estate, a backdrop for this awe inspiring hamlet.
The owners have been faithful stewards of this precious land holding and have helped to revive many of the old traditions such as the Rodeos that date as far back as the 1940's and horse drawn stagecoach rides, and have added wonderful new traditions for the community to enjoy. “The history of the area is what’s so interesting,” adds Camille Ruvo. “To know about the rodeos and the other things that happened on the ranch for many, many years- and then it just sat there quiet. To continue on with some of those traditions became a goal for us.”
The annual "Glenbrook Rodeo" held on the Ranch is a tradition dating back to the 1940's. The popular event was revived by the current owners in 2000, featuring bull and bronco riding, ribbon roping and barrel racing. In addition to the rodeo, there are carnival games and a silent auction followed by an extraordinary dinner prepared by restaurateur Emeril Lagasse. Past headliners including Robin Williams, Jay Leno, Lionel Richie, Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Kenny Loggins and the band America have performed in the 5,000-square-foot entertainment barn. Built in 1873, the barn has been restored with a chef's kitchen and glass wine room. “They don’t make barns like this in Texas,” President Bush told the owners when he visited the Ranch one summer.
Offering a preeminent, year-round lifestyle combined with Nevada tax benefits, Shakespeare Ranch is just four hours from San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley, and under an hour by air. "This significant landholding on the shores of Lake Tahoe can never be replicated," states Claudia Thompson, long time Glenbrook resident and co-listing agent. "Shakespeare Ranch is truly a place to set down roots and to leave a legacy." More details about this historic landmark are available at TahoeLegacy.com.
